Contemporary Literature Reflection

Why did you sign up, and did it meet your expectations?

I don't often read fiction so this class was a good way to expose myself to some. I wasn't really sure what to expect other than to experience some contemporary literature so it met my expectations with flying colors. One of the main contributors to my joining is that Mr. Davidson told me to. I really enjoyed this class. 

Which was your favorite novel and why?

I really like Please Ignore Vera Dietz and it's probably one of my favorite books I've read in school, but I loved The Art of Racing in the Rain. I loved the unique narration and the how real the characters felt. The racing metaphors were really interesting - I would never have thought I could learn something insightful from racecars. This was also the only book who's ending made me cry. 

Which was your favorite project and why?

I liked the TED talk just because it gave me an excuse to rant about my interests. I also really liked learning from my classmates presentations and the variety of our topics. 

Why should others sign up for this course?

The books are reason enough to take the course. In your regular English class you're only really taught how to analyze literature but here there is a big focus on  your own individual evaluation which is a really valuable school. It's also not too work heavy and the assignments you do get are really easy like the nightly reading sheets. It's a perfect senior year elective that you'll get a lot more out of compared to a study hall.

Poster Campaign Proposal  I have chosen to create a series of posters to reach the student body and encourage participation. Every day students walk past posters and don’t give them a second thought. The standard poster at this school falls into one of three categories: Advertisements, Infographics, and Decorations. Literacy Project Reflection

  My Project I chose to design a poster campaign comparing the effects of a physical book and reading online. I read about research conducted by the American Academy of Pediatrics that says the action of turning pages in a physical book enhances comprehension and memory retention. Additionally, a study published in the journal "PLOS ONE" found that reading physical books leads to better sleep quality, as the absence of blue light emitted by screens reduces sleep-disrupting effects. The goal of my project was to spread awareness of these facts and others.  Design Explanation I wanted to design posters that avoided the colors of the school as well as basic formatting. So I used colors that I didn’t usually see around the school and formatted them in ways that were unique. Throughout my academic journey, any class that had us reading was always my favorite. I remember freshman year reading the Odyssey for the first time and it revived my obsession with Percy Jackson and then spiraled out into reading the original myths and plays. Then I would read something that got me interested in something else, and through these classes, I would learn and experience ideas I wouldn't have thought to look for. For me, English has been a class with such foundational ideas that I see them in so many other facets of my life. The teachers I've had over the years were teaching me to be a good reader and writer, but also they taught me media literacy.
